BIOGRAPHY

Hailing from Oak Park, IL, pianist, guitarist, and composer Rob Clearfield grew up steeped in music. After a childhood filled with garage bands, gospel choirs, South American guitar ensembles, and everything in between, Rob moved to nearby Chicago to study at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. During and after college, he embedded himself in the local music scene, residing in the city for fifteen years before departing for France in 2019.

Rob has released over ten recordings of original music and improvisation to date. Following co-led projects with saxophonist Caroline Davis in 2019 and drummer Quin Kirchner in 2022, Rob released Ashes and Diamonds in 2023; a five-movement suite exploring the nature of transitions from one era to another, and how cataclysmic events bring about both positive and negative changes. His newest album Voice in the Wilderness (2025) features Joe Sanders, Fred Pasqua, and Itamar Borochov. 

In addition to his own projects, Rob can be seen regularly these days in groups led by Grazyna Auguscik, Estelle Perrault, Hermon Mehari, and Olga Amelchenko, among many others. Over the course of his career, he has had the privilege of performing and recording artists such as with John Wetton, Patricia Barber, Howard Levy, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, District 97, Eighth Blackbird, Fareed Haque, Patrick Zimmerli, Simon Moullier, Yuhan Su, and Greg Ward

Rob currently resides in Marseille, France.

Originaire d’Oak Park dans l’Illinois, le pianiste, guitariste, compositeur et improvisateur Rob Clearfield a tout jeune participé à différentes groupes musicaux amateurs, chorales de gospel, ensembles de guitares sud-américains,… avant de déménager à Chicago pour étudier au Chicago College of Performing Arts de l’Université Roosevelt. Dès lors, et pendant une quinzaine d’années, il intègre activement la scène musicale locale.

À ce jour, Rob a sorti plus de dix enregistrements en leader. Suivant des projets co-dirigé par la saxophoniste Caroline Davis en 2019 et le batteur Quin Kirchner en 2022, Rob a sorti Ashes and Diamonds en 2023, une suite en cinq mouvements qui explore la nature des transitions d’une époch à l’autre, et la manière dont les événements cataclysmiques entraînent des changements tans positifs que négatifs. Son album le plus récent, entitulé Voice in the Wilderness (2025) comprend la collaboration de Joe Sanders, Fred Pasqua, et Itamar Borochov.

En plus de ses projets personels, on peut voir Rob régulièrement ces jours-ci dans les groupes de Grazyna Auguscik, Estelle Perrault, Hermon Mehari, et Olga Amelchenko, parmi beaucoup d’autres.
